Brahma & Gayatri, Pushkar lake

Brahma était marié (ou en couple, fort probablement pas PACSé) lors de son installation à Pushkar, il manquait juste que soit réalisé la cérémonie du «yagna» pour que toutes les prérogatives à une bonne union soient dûment remplies. Cette cérémonie exige que les deux époux soient présents. Brahma envoya son fils Narad trouver Savitri afin de l’accompagner sur les lieux du yagna.

Empêtrée dans certaines «convenances» Savitri nécessita tant de temps que les rishis et Brahma prirent la décision de faire venir au plus vite une femme locale pour ne pas risquer de compromettre la cérémonie. Gayatri, une gopi, une intouchable fut choisie. Lorsque finalement Savitri arriva sur le lieu du yagna, Narad vint à elle pour lui dire : «Oh mère ! Que vous arrivez tard. Brahma s’est marié avec une autre femme. Si vous ne me croyez pas, allez voir par vous même.»

Les autres femmes des Dieux présents (Lakshmi, Parvati et Indrani) consolèrent Savitri et lui dirent de ne pas le croire. Aussitôt Savitri alla à la rencontre de Brahma qui baissa les yeux dès qu’il la vit. Gayatri aussi était présente. Savitri piqua une colère divine et dit à Brahma : «Est-il correct de se marier à quelqu’un de caste inférieure ? Cette femme est une gopi, une Gop Kanya et les Gopas n’ont pas le sens du devoir, du dharma. Pourquoi avoir choisi cette femme ? N’y avait-il aucune fille de brahmane dans aucun des trois Mondes ? Tu as agi à l’encontre des lois du dharma, en conséquence tu ne seras plus vénéré ailleurs que dans le temple de Pushkar et chacun de tes adorateurs qui le fera ailleurs finira dans l’indigence.

S’adressant à Vishnou elle rajouta : « Puisque tu as approuvé cette union, tu auras à supporter d’être incarné en humain que l’on a séparé de sa bien-aimée.»

A Shiva elle dit : « Puisque tu as joyeusement béni ce mariage, aussi resteras-tu triste » puis elle jeta aussi un sort aux Brahmanes présent lors de la cérémonie : « Vous vivrez toute votre vie une existence de misère et si jamais par hasard vous obteniez quelque richesse que ce soit, jamais vous ne pourrez en profiter.»

La vache qui accueillit Gayatri dans son corps afin de lui donner un caractère sacré fut elle aussi damnée.

Lorsque Savitri s’en alla finalement, vers le Nord, Brahma l’interpella : «Savitri ne soit pas fâchée et essaies de comprendre les circonstances. Je t’aime toujours, restes avec moi, Gayatri sera ta servante.»

Savitri n’écoutant que sa contrariété s’en fut en haut de la colline Ratna Giri pour une retraite. Un temple fut ensuite construit à cet endroit et aujourd’hui tout mari qui vénère Savitri dans ce temple quitte la vie après sa femme.

Gayatri aussi a son temple sur le haut d’une colline voisine de celle de Savitri. C’est un temple mineur, aujourd’hui en sale état de destruction.

Brahma également a son temple, le seul en Inde en son nom. D’autres temples ont une idole de Brahma placée au Nord du temple.

Brahma was married when he settled in Pushkar, or almost married. It was just needed to be done the « yagna » ceremony so every prerogatives would be respected. This ceremony needs both of the couple so Brahma sent his son Narad to meet Savitri to accompany her to the ceremony.

Stocked away from the ceremony due to some odd customs, Savitri lost so much time that the rishis and Brahma decided to replace her by a local girl so the timing of the ceremony could be respected. Gayatri a gopi, an untouchable was choosen. When finally Savitri arrived on the spot of the yagna, Narad came to her telling : « Oh worship Mother ! You are very late. Brahmaji has married another girl. If you do not believe me, please go and see yourself.»

The other gods’ wives (Lakshmi, Parvati and Indrani) started to console Savitri and told her not to believe in his words. Savitri went straight away to meet Brahma who lowered his head as soon as he saw her. Gayatri was also there. Savitri got mad and told Brahma : « Was it right to marry a girl who belongs to a lower caste ? She is a Gop girl, a Gop kanya and Gopas do not have the sense of duty, they do not know what dharma is. If you thought it essential to marry a girl for yagna why did you choose that girl ? Was there not any brahmin girl in all the Three worlds ? You have done it against the Dharma and for this denounced deed you will nowhere be worshipped in the world except at this place in Pushkar. The persons who will worship you at some other places will grow poor.»

Speaking to Vishnu she said : « As you have approved the girl for the marriage for this old fellow who has lost his reason, so I curse you that you will clothe your soul in the flesh of a man and you will have to suffer a great sorrow for a long time of parting from your wife. Then you will realise what the real sorrow of separation from the beloved ones is.»

Then she spoke to Shiva and cursed him : « As you also happily allowed Brahma to marry a girl of a lower class, so you shall always be unhappy ». Then she cursed too the brahmins : « You shall always live the life of a poor man. If by chance you get any wealth, you will not be able to use it.»

Savitri also cursed the cow who sheltered Gayatri in its body to make her holy so she could marry a god.

Whilst Savitri went away in the northern direction, Brahma told her : « O Savitri ! don’t get angry like that ! Try to understand the circumstances under which I was compelled to marry Gayatri. The time of inauguration of the yagna was passing away and till then you did not come. So I married her, I still love you as before and treat you as my wife, and Gayatri will remain your maid servant. Secondly, according to Dharma a husband and for a lady like you who belongs to a noble family, husband is everything, never mind that he could be poor, ugly or stupid.»

Remaining upset, Gayatri went on the top of the Ratna Giri hill for a great penance. A temple then was made there and today any husband who worships Savitri in this temple will die after his wife.

Gayatri too has her own temple on the neighbouring hill of Ratna Giri. It is a much smaller temple than Savitri, a minor temple who is right now in a very bad state.

Brahma also has its own temple in Pushkar, the only one in his name in India. Other temples have an idol of Brahma within the premises of the temple, and the statues are placed on the Northern side.
