27 / Lirbai Ji / Déesse tatouée de l'Inde / Tattooed goddess of India

The beautiful wall paintings paying a tribute to the Gandhian thought and the old buildings that fight against the ravages of the passing time, even though charming, haven't been the main reason of my staying in Porbandar.

About 6 months before an information popped up in my life, an information that would feed much intellectual speculations in my head. A tattooed woman from the socio-cultural group Maher (pronounce Mer ) was venerated in the gujarati region of Porbandar and the only image I got of her, of low quality, would effectively let me think that she was at least tattooed on the arms and throat. Her name is Lirbai, and she rather is a saint than a goddess. Born during the 19th century, when young she was the maid of a couple of two holy persons, then became herself the aim of a veneration, especially due to the way she left life : by practicing a « samadi », that means burried alive.

I won't tell more (I keep the longer version for the paper version of « India under the skin ») but here are a few pics that will lead you to another amazing side of Mother India :) ….. and so much to write, to tell, to see.
