Voici que grâce a mon inénarrable ami tatoueur de Delhi 4-Lee (prononcer Charlie, 4 se prononçant TCHAR en hindi. De son vrai nom Ajay Sharma) je fais une bonne rencontre vers la station de métro Tilak Nagar. Manjeet est assurément un des meilleurs tatoueurs de la place, qui de plus a suivi un parcours atypique et artistique qui fait de lui un artiste avant d’être un bon tatoueur. De plus ce qui est remarquable c’est qu’il est tout bonnement auto-didacte et que voici six ans la peau ne faisait pas encore parti des matériaux utilisés pour exprimer son art, l’art graphique, art populaire (peintre de cinéma « hoardings »), élitiste aussi (des clients argentés lui demandent des fresques murales pour leur intérieur personnel) ou underground.(le tatouage pas encore si accepté et même fermant la porte à certaines professions tels que policier ou soldat mais aussi certaines professions de santé). Manjeet a ouvert son studio voici 2 ans, rapidement rejoint dans l’aventure par Paramjeet. L’aventure se passe à merveille mais ne saurait occulter le parcours pas très anodin de Manjeet. Dans les années 90 il travaillait dans la filière cinéma, il apprit pendant 2 ans auprès d’un maître peintre de hoardings puis travailla 5 années supplémentaires dans ce même atelier. Manjeet fait déjà parti de la race des dinosaures, il a connu de l’intérieur un art graphique disparu depuis peu, poussé dans les orties par un nouveau matériaux souples, légers, imprimables en très grand format : le flex. La ville de Delhi aurait de même précipité la chute en interdisant le hoarding pour cause de danger collectif. En effet il arrivait que ce grand panneau de bois faisait un peu trop barrage au vent parfois et que quelques passants en pâtissaient. Le flex, matériaux légers et se déchirant assez aisément fait moins peur. Manjeet m’a fourni quelques photos de ses hoardings pour vous les faire partager, ces photos font parti d’un héritage commun d’un art disparu et qui parfois survit sous diverses formes comme les peintures murales exécutées auprès de privés encore aujourd’hui par Manjeet. Le voici donc sans emploi après 7 années de hoardings, période où ils s’occupe bien et qui aboutira à une prise de décision sans appel : son prochain substrat de création sera la peau. Ils cherchent conseils qu’il n’obtient jamais, aussi apprend-il seul, et six années plus tard, quelques litres d’encre injectés sous l’épiderme le voici comme étant un des tatoueurs de Delhi sur qui l’art peut compter.

Once again thanks to my friend Alay Sharma AKA 4-Lee, I do a great encounter close to the metro station Tilak Nagar.. Manjeet is surely one of the best tattoo artist staying in Delhi and in India, over all who had a wicked professional background. He is an artist before being a good tattooist. He is a self-made man who, six years back, was not using skin as a substance to express his art, graphic art, popular art (painter of cinema « hoardings »), for elite too (some wealthy order him some paintings and graffitis on their private walls) or underground.(tattoo is still not so well accepted, and tattoo still forbide some people to have a career in the police, in the army as well as for some profession of health care). Manjeet opened his tattoo studio 2 years back, quickly joined in the adventure by Paramjeet. The aventure is great but could not make forget about the past life of this artist. In the 90’s he worked in the cinema industry, or just next to it, he started to work in the field of hoardings, learned the base with a master for 2 years and worked another 5 years with the same team. Manjeet is partly a dinosaur, he got to see from the inside the art of hoardings creation, hoardings that disappeared from the landscape du to the emergence of flex, cheap and easy to work material, and so much cheaper !.The city of Delhi even forbide these hoardings due to a certain danger while thee weather being windy it would happen that some walkers paid the high price for art. Flex, light and tearable material was the perfect one for the city council. Manjeet gave me a few slides of some of the hoardings he worked on, here are 5 ones. They are part of a common inheritage that survives somehow thanks to some rich clients who ask these kind of paintings in their own house. So after 7 years of painting works Manjeet is jobless, getting always busy though. But it’s after that period that he decided that his next canvas would be the human skin. He tries to get advises from anyone but nothing happens, and that’s the way he became a self made tattooist, six years later and a few liters of ink injected under the skin, here he is as one of the best tattoo artist of India, on which art can count.
