Pas facile de quitter Kolkata si tôt, et pour se manger 22 heures de train jusqu'à Guwahati en Assam. On a toujours plus de ressort que l'on imagine, j'ai finalement mangé mes 22 heures de train + 1 heure car je suis gourmand.
Me voici donc à Guwahati (eeuuuhh, en fait un peu plus loin déjà …), capitale de l'Assam et du moustique. Gros centre urbain dans la plaine, elle est chaotique et poussiéreuse à l'image de tant d'autres en Inde, ville pour les véhicules uniquement. La belle vie de piéton, tu oublies et tu changes de bled, t'en cherches un en Suisse par exemple. La ville est aussi la proie du moustique mais son avantage est que pendant que tu te grattes tu oublies un peu l'état des trottoirs et de la chaussée. Voila pour la rigolade ! Car une belle rencontre et un intérêt suprême m'y attendait : rencontrer Mo Naga, artiste atypique dont j'avais entendu parler parfois dans quelques articles de journaux glanés sur le net. Mo est Naga de l'état de Manipur. La nation Naga déborde du Nagaland et se retrouve au Manipur, en Arunachal Pradesh et aussi un grand groupe au Myanmar. Mo est le seul tatoueur indien que j'ai rencontré s'intéressant à sa culture ancestrale, il collecte les motifs tatoués et ses histoires, il collecte aussi les motifs Naga qu'il peut observer sur les tissus tissés ou sculptés sur le bois.
Puis il digère toutes ces histoires, se les répète et échafaude aussi des théories basées sur ses recherches, théories parfois très éloignées des versions officielles.
Mo réinvente aujourd'hui l'art Naga, en fait sa promotion et le tatoue sur qui le veut bien. Au sein de son école de tatouage il forme de jeunes talents locaux (et aussi quelques étrangers moins jeunes) qui seront les propagateurs de leur culture ancestrale de coupeurs de têtes tatoués et offriront sans doute à Mo le sentiment du travail bien fait, de la mission accomplie. Mo y travaille … tous les jours.

Not that easy to leave Kolkata yet, especially to stand 22 hours of train till Guwahati in Assam. But we can stand much more than we think, so finally I even stood 1 extra hour.
So Guwahati here I am now (eeuuuhhh, in fact a little further yet …), capitale of Assam and capitale of mosquitoes. Big city in the plain, chaotic and dusty as many other indian cities, city for vehicules only. The beautiful life of pedestrian, you forget and you rather move to another urban center, in Switzerland for example. Guwahati is also the aim of mosquitoe's attacks which has an advantage : while you scratch you forget about the state of the sidewalks and the pavement.
More seriously, it was an honnor and a suprem interest that led me here : to meet Mo Naga, atypical artist that I have heard of a few times while reading some newspapers found on internet. Mo is a Naga from Manipur. The Naga nation overflows its borders and is settled now for some of them in Manipur, for others in Arunachal Pradesh and for others in Myanmar. Mo is the only indian tattoo artist I met who is very interested in his own ancient culture, who collects meetings and stories but also the designs he observes on wood carvings or on weaving textiles.
Then he digests all these stories and bring up sometimes new theories that can be soeties far away from the official ones.
Mo today reinvents the Naga art, promotes it and even tattoo it to whoever desires it on his /her skin. Within his tattoo school in Guwahati (that he just moved to Dimapur - Nagaland) he educates some young local talents (and some foreigners not so young also) who will spread this ancient culture of headhunters and will surely reward Mo with the good feeling of the work well made, of the mission accomplished. Mo is working on it … everyday.
